Are they really Protege5 if they show no rust?

They are almost common here. See them every day.

I think the 90s through early 2000s were peak car. They figured out emissions, electronic engine controls, and how to make decent horsepower again. After that they got slab sided, big and ugly, and also started using touch screens infotainment, etc. to a much greater extent.
So hip hooray for the Protege, fine example of what was right about cars from this era

I think it was peak build quality for Toyota, too. Everything after 2007 seems to have a lot of hard, unforgiving plastics and dissatisfying door slams.

They used to be a relatively common sight around Philly. Road salt returned most of them to the earth.

I really like final-gen Protégés, and the Protege5 is my favorite of them all. And, I have been seeing them for Lemons prices these days. I would love to run one in Lemons someday.
